Road to the Oscars
All the President’s Men This movie was nothing like I had anticipated. First off, solely due to the title, I was assuming for it to be movie revolving around the conditions of a presidential campaign. Thankfully though, it wasn’t. Instead, it was about the most intriguing president, in my opinion, and his best-known scandal, Watergate. As always, Dustin Hoffman was terrific as the overly-confident Carl Bernstein. And Robert Redford was perfect as the more timid half of the duo, Bob Woodward. I really loved that for once, in a political movie, the point of view was from the side of the public, as opposed to those in the limelight. It shed a different light on the situation. 424 movies left. A Streetcar Named Desire I watched this movie a few days after finishing reading the play. Both, I’m happy to say, were great! Of course my favorite line was Stanley screaming out Stella’s name. But I thought the movie was especially impressive because it stayed so true to the play. There were hardly any changes. The thing I love about the story is not only the contrast in societal dynamics shown between Blanche and Stanley, but how representative it is of the time period. The way he regards Stella, as not only a piece of meat, but as his own slave whom he can abuse whenever he feels the need, was how many men looked at “their” women. Of course, Stanley, like every chauvinist, had his moments. But, true to form, he always retreated back to his primal ways. 423 movies left. My Fair Lady For probably 13 years, I’ve been trying to convince my mom to give me her collector’s edition Eliza DooLittle Barbie. I gave this up when I was about seven, after repeated attempts to watch the entire movie, My Fair Lady; as my mother said that was the only way I could open the doll’s box. Fast forward about ten years, and my taste has [Thankfully!] matured, a lot. I recently watched the entire movie. And I absolutely loved it! The music was great, and it was definitely more of a feel-good and less of a romance, than I was expecting. This turned out to be a good thing, as I would have probably mocked the predictability of a romance between Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. Thankfully though, Audrey instead put him in his place. Finally an empowering female lead in a modernistic society! 422 movies left.
